Women and Firearms

Today's media portrays firearm (especially handgun) ownership as something for people who are out of the mainstream. They say that they are for the "good old boys" to cling to and are portrayed as backwards and out of touch with modern life. However, there has never been a greater need for firearms -- especially for women. Back in 1836 when Samuel Colt introduced the first, commercially viable revolver it was said that "God made men, but Sam Colt made them equal." This saying extends to include women today when facing attackers twice their size. The handgun for protection levels the playing field and prevents women from always ending up a victim.

woman and gunsThe reason for this fact is so obvious that today's anti-gun intellectuals look right past it. Guns eliminate the strength difference between the strong and the weak. This makes it much harder for the strong to prey upon the weak. Let's look at 2 examples. In the first scenario, a 120-pound woman faces three, 300-pound thugs with her bare hands, a whistle, a can of mace or even a Taser (all of these items being recommended by mainstream media as ways for women to protect themselves). The end result of this scenario is one dead or very injured woman. In scenario two let's look at three, 300-pound thugs and a 120 pound woman armed with a .357 magnum revolver. The end result is likely going to be one of two possibilities: Either the attackers are going to turn and run or they are going to be incapacitated to where they can no longer pose a threat to you. It doesn't take much common sense to figure out that  nothing makes a criminal run away faster than a loaded gun pointing at them.

Consider rape -- a crime that involves a stronger man attacking a weaker woman. In most cases, the rapist gets the upper hand in a battle of fists. The "experts" recommend women should act passively when attacked by a rapist. The reason for this is that the more a weaker person fights against a stronger one, the more chance the weaker person has of being seriously hurt. However, while this is true in and of itself, it is foolish to stop there and not consider the ways to strengthen that woman. This advice assumes that there is no way for the weaker person to turn the strength advantage away from the attacker. But a gun will always do that and allow the weak to become strong. Women who have guns, who train and know how to use them are much less likely to be victims of violent crime. In fact, professor John Lott in his book "More Guns, Less Crime" says that "by far the safest course of action is to have a gun. A woman who behaves passively is 2.5 times as likely to end up being seriously injured as a woman who has a gun."

In arguments against these very obvious facts, the media and their pacifist cohorts will try and tell you that owing a gun is likely to get you shot with your own gun or that having a gun in your house is somehow unsafe and you are likely to end up shooting yourself. Of course, owning a gun is a great responsibility that requires practice and training in order to be safe. But the same is true about virtually every other tool that we use. Nobody worries that you might stab yourself because you own a kitchen knife; that you are going to cut your fingers off because you have a scissors; that you are going to burn yourself because you own a stove or that you are going to kill yourself or others because you drive a car. In all of these cases, you learn how to use the tool and go on. The same is true with guns. Once you learn proper safety techniques, they are as safe as any other tool. Likewise, once you learn how to use them, the chances of an attacker getting your gun from you is minimal. The bottom line is that one can make up all the excuses in the world about how having a gun is going to make you less safe. Unfortunately, none of them come close to passing the sniff test of truth and logic.

In the following articles we discuss several aspects of women and firearms. If you are new to guns and shooting, we recommend taking some classes at a good firearms training school. Our listing of firearms training schools around the country is a good place to start your search for a school that will work for you.
